This blog post consists of a list of great guitarists to follow in order to pick up on techniques and tactics! Under each individual, there will be reasons explaining what makes them great and sets them apart from every other guitarist. Now onto the list:
5. Eric Clapton. Clapton's style is all about what he refers to as phrases. He claims that almost all of his soloing efforts can be reflected back to the "old phrases" that he learned when he first picked up the guitar. This means that his licks and solos are all framed around the same material that he learned growing up playing the guitar. In this Eric Clapton is seen as a real bluesy influenced artist. What makes this so great is that Clapton is always able to find a new spin on an old phrase!
4. B.B. King. You cannot talk about great guitarists and leave the late B.B. King out of the conversation. This is the man who transformed the way that we view soloing in guitar theory today. The legend grew up around blues and so all of his guitar playing has a blues influence. He learned every scale imaginable growing up and would use that knowledge to completely move people listening to him. Some say that he doesn't have an explanation for how he became so dominant on the guitar.
3. Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix is an odd happening in the guitar world. Mainly because as a left handed player, he would hold a righty guitar upside down and play essentially the wrong way. The reason for his success was the fact that he knew all about music theory. He used many chord melodies to create his songs, however, nothing can explain how he was able to learn to play guitar upside down!
2. Dave Matthews. If you have very large hands, you have what we call in the music industry, the Matthews gift! Dave Matthews is such a great guitarist mainly to the fact that his hands could stretch a whole 7 frets from pointer finger to pinky. This explains how Matthews was able to create so many special chords that haven't been heard before. He could play anything he wanted because of his excellent rhythm and oversized hands.
1. John Mayer. Coming in at #1, John Mayer takes the crown. The things that Mayer has done for the guitar industry along with the bars that he has set really makes you appreciate his music even more. As an extremely talented musical prodigy, Mayer has created many of his own personal brandings when it comes to playing the guitar. Whether its his signature palm slap way of playing or his insane licks, he is by far the most important guitar player to this day in age.
